SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

HOW WE MAINTAIN A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

EnerTrain promotes an inclusive and respectful learning environment that recognises and values the diversity of its student cohort. This includes students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, students with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and those of diverse gender identities, sexualities, ages and socio-economic backgrounds.  To ensure all students feel welcomed, safe and respected, EnerTrain implements proactive measures that support inclusive practices throughout the training and assessment journey.

All trainers and assessors are required to participate in ongoing professional development that includes:

  • Cultural safety and responsiveness, with a specific focus on the needs and aspirations of First Nations learners
  • Inclusive training strategies for students with disability and diverse learning needs
  • Approaches to managing and fostering respectful behaviour in a diverse learning environment

Trainers actively reinforce these expectations at the commencement of each program and through ongoing engagement. Where concerns arise, students may raise issues informally with trainers & coordinators, or formally through EnerTrain’s Complaints and Appeals process.

EnerTrain’s commitment to diversity also includes instructional design that reflects inclusive practices, such as varied learning modes, respectful language, and real-world case studies that reflect diverse cultural and workplace contexts.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO A SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

At EnerTrain, we believe every student has a right to learn in an environment that is respectful, culturally safe, and free from discrimination or harm. All students are expected to actively contribute to this by upholding values of safety, equity, and inclusion across all training contexts.

Students are required to:

  • Treat all individuals—peers, trainers, and staff—with respect and dignity, regardless of their background, identity, culture, gender, or ability.

  • Refrain from any conduct that may be considered discriminatory, harassing, or bullying, including language or behaviour that marginalises others based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or religious beliefs.

  • Foster a culturally safe environment, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This means recognising, respecting, and valuing Indigenous perspectives and experiences, and ensuring these students feel seen, heard, and supported.

  • Support the participation of students with disability or additional needs, by encouraging accessibility, showing patience, and avoiding assumptions about capability.

  • Follow all Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, including safe equipment use, proper PPE application, and reporting of any hazards or unsafe behaviour.

  • Adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, including classroom etiquette, online engagement, and maintaining professional behaviour in all learning settings.

  • Respect learner diversity by avoiding offensive jokes, stereotypes, or exclusionary language and actions.

  • Report any inappropriate behaviours, actions or comments you observe, to your trainer/assessor as soon as possible, so we can take appropriate action.

EnerTrain supports students by providing access to reasonable adjustments, student support services, and culturally safe engagement processes. This includes options for alternative assessments, flexible delivery, and individual learning plans, particularly for students with disability, First Nations learners, and those from non-English speaking or disadvantaged backgrounds.

RESPECTING LIVED EXPERIENCE

EnerTrain acknowledges the enduring impacts of colonisation, discrimination, and systemic barriers experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people with disability. We honour their strength, knowledge, and the diversity of their lived experiences.

We recognise that safety is more than physical—it includes cultural, emotional, and psychological safety. For this reason, we are committed to providing learning environments where all students feel respected, valued, and included.

We affirm the rights of students with disability to access and participate in training on equal terms with others. We support this through reasonable adjustments, accessible learning practices, and a commitment to listening and responding to individual needs.

We respectfully acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work and learn. We value the voices, perspectives, and contributions of First Nations learners and commit to building culturally safe learning spaces that support their self-determination, wellbeing, and success.

Upholding the safety and dignity of all learners is not only a compliance obligation—it is essential to a fair, inclusive, and effective learning community for everyone.
