Joe Calabrese

Chairman, Technical Advisor 

Joe has over 40 years’ experience across all areas of the gas industry including:

  • Managing utility training within small and large businesses;
  • Managing apprentices and traineeships; and
  • Delivering accredited and non-accredited training for major clients in the gas distribution and transmission industry.

 

Joe has worked with clients in each state of Australia and in New Zealand, and all of the gas utilities. He has delivered accredited training and assessment on behalf of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) such as ZNX(2) for the Zinfra Group and Swinburne TAFE.

Joe established and managed AGL’s RTO after which he established and continues to operate UtiliTrain Pty Ltd which is recognised as NSW’s largest and most respected gas industry training company.

Joe has been a member of E-oz Energy Skills Australia various Gas System Operations Technical Advisory Committees (Gas TACs) developing industry training competencies and qualifications since 1996. Joseph has influenced the gas industry’s training agenda for nearly 20 years as a board member and past Chair of the NSW Utilities & Electrotechnology Industry Training Advisory Body (NSW U&E ITAB) and various E-oz Skills Council committees.

Jason Van Koll

Managing Director

Jason has had experience in the utilities industry for more than 16 years, and has held several positions relating to training and compliance, in particular, focussed on Work Health & Safety (WHS) aspects of the utilities industry. Known for taking a risk based approach for all problem solving projects, Jason provides innovative solutions through consultation, process analysis & improvement and workforce development strategies.

Jason’s training and assessment skills and knowledge have developed from his experience in:

  • Design and maintenance of ASQA compliant training & assessment resources
  • Management of training teams and programs
  • Active involvement in Technical Advisory Committees
  • Management of workforce development strategy

Richard Blagrove

Senior Associate

Richard has over 30 years of extensive experience in the gas and utility infrastructure industry. He has been a prominent figure in the New South Wales gas industry since the 1980’s.

Richard’s work history includes roles in energy training and education, gas operations and construction and, more recently, in the business and commercial arena. Richard was directly responsible for the extension of natural gas to over 20 regional cities and towns in the Riverina and Central West regions of NSW, which was a first in terms of introducing natural gas to these significant areas. This involved the construction of 335 km gas transmission pipelines, and over 1000 km’s of distribution pipeline and many associated gas facilities. He then spent many years involved in the commercial development and growth of AGL’s key infrastructure assets.

Upon the commencement of the Agility business (AGL’s Energy Infrastructure Contracting & Services business) Richard was instrumental in securing Agility’s inaugural gas and electricity contracts throughout Australia. Richard then went on to spend over 3 years directly involved in the LPG and LNG industry primarily in sales, marketing and development roles. Richard then returned to the energy infrastructure arena joining Jemena in early 2010 in the role of National Development Manager Gas & Water.

Upon the separation of Jemena’s Asset and Services business culminating on the commencement of Jemena’s Services and contracting business Zinfra Group, Richard was part of the inaugural executive leadership team initially in the role of General Manager Network Services and later becoming General Manager Strategy and Market Development leading up to his semi-retirement at the end of 2014.

Since semi-retirement Richard has spent time as a Strategic Advisor and General Consultant in the energy infrastructure arena and continues to do so.

Richard is a qualified Gas Engineer, holds a Master’s of Business Administration from MGSM Macquarie University, Diploma of Adult Education from University of Technology Sydney. Richard is current Chair of the Institute of Gas Engineers Australia and past Chair of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association. (NSW)

John Granat

Senior Training Consultant

John is highly respected as a System Operations specialist, and has been providing specialist training services in this industry stream since 2016.  John has also consulted extensively to the industry and has made significant contributions to the improvement of work practices.  John has over 13yrs of field experience in Pressure Control on Transmission and Distribution systems.

John delivers training and assessment in:

Mitchell Eddy

Gas Distribution Technical Trainer

Mitchell is a qualified plumber and builder and has 25 years’ construction and utilities industry experience. He is actively involved in WHS safety committees and has supervised and managed field personnel in both the construction and utilities industries. Mitchell is also highly skilled in the development of training resources and programs for the utilities industry.

Paul Ingram

Gas Distribution Technical Trainer

Paul is a fully licensed plumber and gasfitter with 35 years experience in Natural and LPG, all aspects of industrial and commercial metering installation and in the application and interpretation of AS5601 legislation and policy. He has been delivering training and assessment for the gas industry since 1998 previously delivering training and assessment for AGL, TAFE and UtiliTrain. Paul maintains current skills and knowledge through his ownership of Acacia Gas Pty Ltd.

Leng Saw

Gas Transmission Training Specialist

Leng is a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Queensland, Australia. On graduating in 1981, he worked as a design and project engineer for the minerals and chemical processing industry in Australia. From 1997 to 2013, Leng was the chief executive and owner of Romea Training, a well-known Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO) providing oil and gas upstream, midstream and downstream technical, operations and safety training up to diploma level.

Leng has worked very closely with industry to develop and deliver competency-based training. He is a passionate trainer with a reputation for delivering interesting and industry-relevant training that is engaging, entertaining and informative.

Leng has trained and assessed employees from APA Group, Ativo, AusTrade, BHP Billiton, CITIC Pacific, Department of Mines & Petroleum WA, DBP, Enerflex, Energy Australia, Energy Infrastructure Management, Ergon Energy, Jemena, NT Power & Water, Petronas, Queensland Alumina, Raytheon, Santos, SEAGas, TasGas, Wesfarmers and Worley Parsons.

Leng is qualified to deliver and assess transmission pipeline construction operations and maintenance training up to diploma level in the PMA08 Chemical, Hydrocarbons and Refining Training Package and UEG11 Gas Industry Training Package.

Charlie Grigio

Gas Transmission Technical Trainer

In 1978, Charlie commenced work after completing an apprenticeship as a telephone technician. In 2002, he left Telstra and qualified as a workplace trainer and assessor with Thornlie TAFE, lecturing in electronics and computer systems.

In 2006, he commenced with Romea Training, delivering training in operations, safety and technical courses in the areas of upstream, midstream and downstream, up to Certificate IV level. In 2008, Charlie was instrumental in Romea Training becoming a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) holding various roles including being the main contact for the RTO, Compliance Officer, Website Manager and Funding Officer.

Charlie helped develop units of competency for the UEG11 Training Package for E-Oz Energy Skills Australia the Industry Skills Council (ISC) responsible for the UEG11 Training Package and has been a contact for the PMA/UEG Training Packages.

Charlie has worked in close consultation with clients, and delivered training and assessment services for employees of APA Group, DBP, Enerflex, Energy Infrastructure Management, Jemena, Origin Energy, Santos, SeaGas and Wesfarmers.
